States Handed Out Poisoned Toothpaste

advertisement

(June 28) - After federal health officials discovered last month that tainted Chinese toothpaste had entered the United States, they warned that it would most likely be found in discount stores.

In fact, the toothpaste has been distributed much more widely. Roughly 900,000 tubes containing a poison used in some antifreeze products have turned up in hospitals for the mentally ill, prisons, juvenile detention centers and even some hospitals serving the general population...

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Boycott China. This is ridiculous. I can't believe they are poisoning us, and the government continues to let their products into this country.

This is sensationalism and racism at work here. The ingredient is actually a common ingredient that many companies use - it's just that China's version of the FDA allows a higher percentage than America's FDA allows.

So to say that they put "poison" in the toothpaste and even worse, to suggest they did it with menacing motives is sensationalism and is anti-Chinese racism.

More facts and a broader perspective are two things American journalists are NOT known for, but would be an asset to help stamp out ALL forms of bigotry that exist in our world today.
